The Cpl Joe McCarthy Foundation Accomplishments of 2005 & 2004
In December 2005 we held our Logo Contest. We did not find a winner but we had
some very impressive artwork submitted. We like to thank all of our 20 entries
and are happy you shared your creative talents with us. Each entry were awarded
for their efforts with vouchers from the following local merchants: Speedy B ,
Corkey's, Rent A Flix, El Camino's, Home Town Movie Theater, Out Back
Chiropractor
Also in December, we sponsored “Greetings From Home!” We sent off cards,
letters, and donated home baked goodies collected from our community warm
hearts. 54 American soldiers received a variety of homemade cookies and breads
and 8 letters each. I have received 2 letters back so far thanking everyone for
their time and thoughts! You all deserve a big huge, just like the one you help
send them. Thank you from us all.
Christmas 2004 “Greetings from Home” We sent out 200 gift bags with home made
goodies and over 8 letters each to a Marine platoon in Fallujah Iraq.
I like to take a moment to list a few things we were able to do for some of our
St Johns kids and our community’s veterans in 2005.
Two school registrations were paid; two field trip costs were paid. Purchase of
eyeglasses for a student at the high school. A book bag filled with school
supplies. 165 stockings were given out at Christmas time. A Christmas meal was
provided for a family of 8. We provided the cookies at this years Christmas town
gathering after the parade.
We, with the help of our local boy scouts, replaced all the grave site flags and
those in need of a veteran’s flag holders at both cemeteries. We replaced all
the 36 class room flags at the middle school, and replaced the high school’s
outdoors flag. We also entered a float in this years Christmas parade. The theme
was a child’s Christmas Wish. We chose to remind our town about so many families
wishes “Daddy’s Home” from war.
November 05 we held two fundraisers. During the week of Veteran’s Day local (9)
volunteers stood outside some of town’s local business and collect donations.
Each donation received an American flag pin .Throughout the entire month of
November, St Johns Drug, Ace Hardware, and Napa, sold cards with the photo of
Joe with the Iraqi Kids on them for 1.00 each. They then displayed them in their
store’s front windows.( All participants were awarded something for their
efforts) All donations collected from this fundraiser went into the veterans
memorial fund.
The Labor day weekend we were a food vendor at the St Johns Grand Prix. We also
had foundations products for sale. We held a raffle with top prize of Hand made
quilt and a 309 riffle.
Sept 17th 05 we held our first annual “A Hero’s Ball”. It was held at Hondah
Resort/Casino and everyone who attended (approx. 40) had a great time. This was
our first fundraiser for the foundation. It is our intention to hold it annually
to honor the day Cpl Joe McCarthy gave his life for his country. All money
raised from this event went into the general fund.
